Kyle is pulled out of the car unconscious, but he has a passenger in the car.Few people understand small-town living better than Ree Drummond. The younger generation has their own romantic woes, too: Annie has a crush on Ty, but Kyle has a crush on Annie, and it all ends very badly in a dramatic post-prom party that leads to a massive accident. Noreen and Bill break up, and Bill begs Maddie to take him back. Helen finally breaks up with her longtime, on-and-off boyfriend Ryan (Michael Shenefelt), because she wants children and he doesn't, and grows close with Erik. She also reconnects with her old fling and silent business partner, Micah (Marland Burke), and grows close with hot farmer Jeremy (Chase Anderson). Dana Sue, meanwhile, summons her estranged husband, Ronnie (Brandon Quinn), home so they can officially divorce - but Ronnie wants to move back in instead.

In the romance realm, Maddie strikes up a relationship with her son's handsome former MLB pro baseball coach, Cal, though they have a major fight before the season ends. Season 1 sees the women team up and open a spa, which Maddie manages as Helen continues to practice law and Dana Sue runs her restaurant/town watering hole, Sullivan's. Other town characters include Isaac (Chris Medlin), an employee of Dana Sue's who has come to Serenity to find his birth mother, and Erik (Dion Johnstone), Dana Sue's sous chef who strikes up a friendship with Helen. In addition to the three women (and Maddie's no-good ex, Bill), there's Kyle (Logan Allen), Maddie and Bill's baseball superstar oldest son Ty (Carson Rowland), their theatre-loving middle son Katie (Bianca Berry Tarantino), their youngest and only daughter Annie (Anneliese Judge), Dana Sue's photographer daughter Cal Maddox (Justin Bruening), Kyle's ex-pro baseball coach and Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears), Bill's pregnant mistress. The series, which begins as Maddie reenters the workforce following her separation from high school sweetheart Bill (Chris Klein), features the three women helping one another juggle romantic relationships, family and careers (and dodging the town busybodies while they're at it). Newly divorced Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), lawyer Helen (Heather Headley) and chef Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) have been best friends since they were children growing up in Serenity, South Carolina. The books were shepherded to the screen by executive producer Sheryl Anderson.

Feels Like Family, the third book in the Sweet Magnolias series (of which there are 11 and counting, plus a cookbook), was the Netflix Book Club pick for February 2022, if you want to read along with Uzo Aduba and viewers from around the world. Woods also wrote the Chesapeake Shores novels, which were turned into a series on the Hallmark Channel. A Southern woman herself, Woods splits her time between Florida and Colonial Beach, Virginia, the riverfront town that inspired many of her small-town stories. The series is based on the Sweet Magnolias novels by prolific romance and mystery novelist Sherryl Woods. But you're probably going to need a refresher on the tangled web of South Carolina drama before you head back to Serenity for Season 2. In Sweet Magnolias - Netflix's drama about lifelong South Carolina best friends Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue - the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.

On the other hand, everybody is in your business, always.

Small-town life is a double-edged sword: On one hand, there's a beautiful sense of community and closeness - a built-in group of people to help you through hard times.
